Strange Garden invites you into the imaginative world of artist Eliza-Jane Gilchrist, where the humble material of cardboard is transformed into an extraordinary botanical landscape.
Inspired by close observation of forms in nature such as seed pods, cones, flowers, buds and foliage, Gilchrist celebrates the beauty found in small details and imperfections. Fold marks, creases and bumps become part of each sculpture's unique character, creating a garden that is both familiar and wonderfully strange. Combining intricately hand-cut layers, constructed forms and drawn detail, Gilchrist’s sculptures give the cardboard a second life, believing that it has a “cellular memory” and that it “remembers” being a plant.
Visitors are invited to become part of the exhibition by creating their own cardboard forms to add to a growing community garden. As the exhibition unfolds, this collaborative installation will evolve into a shared landscape shaped by many hands and imaginations.
